The Steelers’ home field since 2001 has been Heinz Field, located in the North Shore neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Prior to that, they played their home games at Three Rivers Stadium from 1970 to 2000. The Steelers also have a practice facility at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.

The Steelers were founded as the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 8, 1933, by Art Rooney. The ownership of the Steelers has remained within the Rooney family since its founding. Dan Rooney, son of founder Art Rooney Sr., is currently the president and co-owner along with his son Art II following Rooney’s death in 2017. With him being a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he had been an influential person in the city’s history-making many decisions regarding business and sports. In 2009 they selected chairman emeritus Dan Rooney for induction into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame.
Rooney was a part-owner and coach of the top NFL team in Pennsylvania from 1941 to 1969 (although they temporarily relocated to Baltimore from 1943 to 1945 because of World War II travel restrictions) and has been credited with the successful regionalization of pro football. He was also an influential figure in establishing the annual preseason game between Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, which became known as the ‘Buckeye Bowl’.
As a youth, Rooney played football for A.Y.M Post #11, where Art Sr. coached. After returning home following his service in World War I, he worked at Jones & Laughlin Steel Company before pursuing a law degree at the University of Pittsburgh. It was there that Rooney established relationships with many of his lifelong friends and business associates including two prominent local businessmen named Arthur B. McBride and Jimmy Miller who would go on to be primary investors in the Steelers.
After being turned down for membership in the NFL, Rooney got the idea to form his own team. He gathered together several of his friends and business associates and formed the Pittsburgh Pirates. The team joined the NFL in 1933 and was later renamed the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Steelers have had a number of iconic players over the years, including Terry Bradshaw, Jerome Bettis, Franco Harris, Hines Ward, and Ben Roethlisberger. These players have been a part of some of the most memorable moments in Steelers’ history, including four Super Bowl championships.
